Free range production still rising

Free range hen numbers continue to increase and break records month by month, according to monthly BEIC data published from its database. The number of free range hens housed on UK farms now exceeds 21 m hens with the on-farm capacity standing in excess of 23m spaces. This compares to just over 15m housed (with a capacity of around 16.5m spaces) in 2013.
1 million more free range hens have been housed in the last six months, perpetuating the 10% year on year expansion experienced over the last three years. Planning data circulated by the Ranger magazine, and supported by BFREPA’s Sustainability Programme, suggests that the greatest level of growth is taking place in Northern Ireland.
