Environment permits threaten flat deck expansion

The Environment Agency has classified flat deck (single-tier non-cage) systems as not being compliant with the EU’s Best Available Techniques Emission levels. This means that any new shed, registered after 21 February that takes a farm’s bird numbers to over 40,000, would make all the flat deck sheds on that farm non-compliant for an environmental permit.
The Agency is also proposing massive increases in charges for new applications and variations. BFREPA is responding to the Agency’s consultation, which ends on 26 January. In the meantime members expanding with new flat deck sheds are encouraged to register them before 21 February and/or make applications or variations as soon as possible.
