It is very difficult to report on packer prices as some packers are reluctant to pass these on to the Ranger, whilst others only want to give us the individual graded prices depending on how competitive they are. In this issue we aim to explain how we have previously calculated the packer price and how we intend to report on the packer price in the future. There are so many variables when it comes to reporting on costings, these will vary from producer to producer. But what is important is that we explain the calculating behind the figures so you can compare your figures on a like for like basis. Our previous calculations were based on the following percentages: Very Large 2.76% This adds up to 100% of the egg you produce and gave us last month’s average packer price of 82.34. We have now produced percentage figures more accurately reflect what our group of producers were producingand will now use these figures to work out our monthly average packer price. Very Large 5.97% So now we have the percentages. The next stage is to work out the prices paid for each grade. As we have previously explained these were based on one of the main packers. But this seemed to be unfair as some producers are with large packers and some with much small packers. So we decided to average the price based on five packers and five producers. Each packer provided us with their graded base price and each of the producers provided us with the price they are currently being paid by their packer at this time.
We then averaged both the packers and producers together to get a figure of 76.74 which is the figure we are currently using as the producer price shown below. Some of the smaller packers fluctuate their price more often than the larger packers so this price will change on a monthly basis. If any producers or packers want to join our monthly packer price index especially those smaller packers please contact the Ranger on 01484 400666. All information given is treated in the strictest confidence.
